How long after tooth extractions can I get dentures?
After a tooth extraction, you’ll want to wait six to eight weeks to be fitted for dentures. This allows time for the swelling to diminish and you’ll get a better fit on your dentures. Our staff will assess how you’re healing at your follow-up appointment and this will determine how long you’ll have to wait.
What is the process of getting dentures?
Prior to getting dentures, we’ll perform any tooth extractions if necessary. After the healing is complete, we’ll fit you for your restoration by taking an impression of your upper or lower arch. You’ll decide on the shade, shape, and size of your new smile. Then, we’ll craft your customized dentures onsight with our in-office laboratory.
You’ll try them on and provide any feedback if changes need to be made. Otherwise, we’ll set your dentures in acrylic and we’ll make any last adjustments at our office. If you develop any sores, it’s important to schedule an appointment by calling our office at (910) 692-4051. We may need to adjust the fit of your dentures.
Can you sleep with dentures?
We recommend that you remove your dentures at night prior to going to bed and soak them in water or a solution while you sleep. Sleeping without dentures gives your gums and bone a chance to relax from the pressure of the denture during the day. Wearing dentures at night can double the risk of pneumonia in elderly patients.
Are dentures or dental implants better?
While they both are solutions to replacing missing teeth, the process and longevity differ. Dentures are a more affordable solution. Within a few visits, you can have any number of teeth replaced. There’s virtually no recovery time or procedure necessary.
Dental implants are a permanent tooth replacement option. They look and feel like your natural teeth. Best of all, they can last a lifetime. Dental implants are surgically affixed to your jaw; therefore there is a period of recovery following the procedure.
